Average number of shipping accidents in the Strait of Malacca is 2 a year. Since the introduction of the Traffic Separation Scheme in the number of shipping accidents has reduced significantly.

 

 

What is aids to navigation (AtoN)?

 

Aids to Navigation are equipment or system or combination of both, that guides seafarers to navigate safely. The aids to navigation, established by the Marine Department are lighthouses, light beacons and light buoys, Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and Automatic ship Identification System (AIS).

 

 

What is a Lighthouse? 

 

A lighthouse is a tall structure that can be in the form of a tower or a building, where a lantern is placed on the top of the structure. The light emitted from the lantern guide navigators and pilots at sea safely. Lighthouses are  used to mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals and reefs and safe entries to harbours.

 

 

What does the flashing light from the lighthouse means? 

 

The flashing light emitted from the aids to navigation is to differentiate between one lighthouse to another whereby the characteristic of the light flashes identify the lighthouse.

 

 

What is the maximum visual range of the light flashing from the lighthouse?

 

The maximum range of the light flashing from the lighthouse may differ depending on the height, type, weather condition and elevation of the observer. Most Lighthouses in Malaysia have maximum range of approx. 23 nautical miles.

 

 

What is a light beacon? 

 

Generally, beacons are the same as with all other visual navigational aids. When beacons are paired, vessels should pass between the pairs. Beacons are also commonly placed individually to mark a turn.

           

 

What is the function of light buoy established along the Malaysian Waters?
