GMDSS

The basic concept of GMDSS is that search and rescue authorities ashore, as well as shipping in the immediate vicinity of the ship or persons in distress, will be rapidly alerted to a distress incident so they can assist in a co-ordinated search and rescue operation with the minimum delay.

GMDSS also provide for urgency and safety communications and the promulgation of maritime safety information.


NAVTEX

NAVTEX is an international automated direct-printing service for promulgation of navigational and meterological warnings and urgent information to ship. It has been developed to provide a low cost, simple and automated means of receiving maritime safety information on board ships at sea and in coastal waters.

NAVTEX fulfill an integral role in GMDSS and is also a component of the World-Wide Navigational Warning Service (WWNWS).


DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING (DSC)

DSC is an integral part of GMDSS and is used for transmitting distress alerts from ships and for transmitting the associated acknowledgements from coast station.
